Catching Up…

March 19, 2009

Looks like two losses since I was last able to get online. I’m back home now, and as promised will cover the games on Saturday and Sunday. Will likely be like the annoying relative who shows you the slideshow of their vacation and share a few things from my trip as well…

(PR) A defensive breakdown by the Trenton Devils late in regulation allowed the Cincinnati Cyclones to score the game-winner Sunday afternoon, 3-2.

Jacob Dietrich was the hero for the Cyclones as he slammed in a loose puck left in the crease with 3:30 left in regulation to vault the Cyclones to victory.

Matt Syroczynski put the Cyclones on the board 12:25 into the second period, taking a feed from Mark Van Guilder in the slot and firing it in for the goal.

The Devils would then get to work on the power play, tying the game up on the two-man advantage. Eric Castonguay shot a laser from the bottom of the near circle to get his 20th goal of the season at 17:42.

Castonguay’s shot resulted in the Devils’ second goal 49 seconds later, as he rifled a shot from the near point that was re-directed by Trevor Kell between the legs of Loic Lacasse to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.

The lead would not last, as 19 seconds later Syroczynski fired a shot from the same spot as his previous goal to net his second of the game at 18:50.

The third period would be mostly even, though it was the Cyclones who came out on top with their fourth win in five games against the Devils this season.

(PR) The Trenton Devils lost a key game in their push to the Kelly Cup Playoffs on St. Patrick’s Day to the Elmira Jackals, 3-2.

The Devils struck first with a tally 11:59 into the contest. Eric Castonguay camped behind the net and waited for Jeff Prough to streak into the slot. The reigning ECHL Player of the Week passed the puck to Prough, who slid it underneath the right pad of Teslak for his 27th goal of the season.

In the second period, the Jackals took control. Pierre-Luc Faubert tied the game with his 20th goal of the season at 2:37. A turnover by Dave Leaderer led to the go-ahead goal by Brendan Connolly at 15:08, putting the Devils into a hole going into the third period.

The Devils would not be able to dig out of that hole, which was made deeper by a Steve Yetman goal 7:03 into the third period. Prough scored his second of the game late with the extra attacker, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Jackals won, 3-2.

Prough’s second goal was assisted by Ryan Gunderson, whose 52nd point broke a seven-year old team record for most points by a defenseman within a season, set by Steve O’Brien during the 2001-02 season.
