Akeson, Coutu Dealt For Gershon

(PR) Trenton, NJ — The Trenton Devils today acquired defenseman Mike Gershon and future considerations from the Wheeling Nailers in exchange for forward Jeremy Akeson and defenseman Justin Coutu. The announcement was made by Albany and Trenton General Manager Chris Lamoriello.

Gershon, 26, hails from Sparta, NJ and comes to the Devils in his second professional season. He appeared in 49 games for Wheeling this season, posting four goals, 14 assists and a plus-four rating. He played 72 games with the IHL’s Port Huron Icehawks in 2009-10 and was plus-19, second best on the team. The 5-10, 195-lb. defenseman played four collegiate seasons at SUNY-Brockport (SUNYAC) where he compiled 17 goals and 26 assists in 101 games from 2005 to 2009. Gershon split one season of junior hockey between Milton and St. Michael’s (OPJHL) where he was a teammate of the only other New Jersey-born Trenton Devil, Mike Potacco. Before playing high school hockey at Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT, Gershon played five seasons with the New Jersey Devils Youth Hockey program from 1993 to 1999. He was born in Teaneck, NJ October 6, 1984.

Trenton visits Reading Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. and hosts Toledo Friday at 7 p.m. and Elmira Sunday at 4 p.m.

So this strikes me as Coutu for Gershon and hey we’ll throw in Akeson for free?

    What a joke.

Akeson and Coutu win this week’s award for the luckiest Delaware Valley residents.

Atta boy Chris – yet another shrewd move.

  2. chiarams Says:

Word is the Devils also got “future considerations” and cash as well.

    Yippee.

  3. titans04 Says:

The party is over for the non- prospects I’m sure the whole Akeson-Zanacaro and I would think even Kell era has come to an end. Don’t think the other two will be moved but highly doubt they’re back, the less that come back the better imo, this team as a group just couldn’t ever get it done. Although the odds of next years team getting it done based on the last decade plus on the Devils side, nill.

  4. titans04 Says:

One might say too little too late as well.

  5. chiarams Says:

Too little too late? For what?

  6. titans04 Says:

to make any meaningful changes to the foursomes.

  7. chiarams Says:

    Touche.

    Well played as usual, buddy.

  8. trentondevilsfan Says:

Doesn’t much matter at this point really. Can’t say I’m opposed to changing up the lineup.

OT: watching game on Vs and wondering what the heck happened to Brian Engblom’s hair. Yikes.

  9. titans04 Says:

He must of left it in the studio.

  10. chiarams Says:

Ginand’s kid brother signed an ATO with Bridgeport – makes his debut tomorrow against Albany.

Another solid recruiting job from the minor league brass.

I can only imagine Ryan gave his brother some sage advice and told him to stay as far away from this place as possible. Lord knows his brother didn’t sign in Bridgeport for the lively fanbase or wonderful nightlife.

  11. titans04 Says:

Wonder what the odds are of them both showing up? Akeson was giving Pender a run for the green jacket at a steller -19.

  12. Titans04 Says:

No need to collect Ginands when there’s 2 more Zajacs out there.

  13. trentondevilsfan Says:

Still, surprised they could resist. They better bring back Ryan, he’s one of a handful of guys worth watching. LOL, guess the Trenton FO is just happy they didn’t trade Tony. That would have made bobble head night a bit awkward. At this point it would’ve been a good laugh though.

  14. chiarams Says:

No doubt these moves are the fault of the strife in Libya.

Those coach buses don’t get terribly good gas mileage, ya know.

  16. chiarams Says:

A couple wheeling folks on facebook are saying the trade has been voided.

Maybe you can’t trade players for a Mobil gift card?

  17. titans04 Says:

Perhaps we tried to pass off damaged goods???

  18. titans04 Says:

    Wheeling Nailers Hockey
The Wheeling Nailers announced Wed. that the recent trade with the Trenton Devils has been revised. The new deal features the Nailers receiving forward Jeremy Akeson from the Devils for future considerations. As part of the new deal, defenseman Mike Gershon will be returned to Wheeling, & Justin Coutu will return to Trenton. Both Akeson & Gershon will be in the lineup this Friday!

  19. titans04 Says:

Lerg back to Albany hopefully meeting with Jason Smith to accept his career advice.

  20. trentondevilsfan Says:

Hah, beat me T04! 🙂 I’ve been scooped dammit! 🙂

  21. trentondevilsfan Says:

Um, what’s rule 64? Because apparently this trade violated it and we have Akeson & Coutu back……

  22. titans04 Says:

LMAO – first shot again goes into the net! Priceless.

  23. titans04 Says:

Akeson ended up getting traded for Future Considerations, no mention of what number Future’s will be wearing.

Pretty sure 64(c) means somebody failed a physical. Happened a couple weeks ago with the Donati trade after Elmira tried to pass him off knowing he needed shoulder surgery.

  24. trentondevilsfan Says:

OK so I didn’t read the rest of the thread 🙂 So basically the deal now is Akeson for a bag of pucks. Yippie.

Lerg’s in Albany, is Caruso trying to do an impression of him?

  25. titans04 Says:

Solid start, Stoesz with 6 penalty mins in the first 9 of the game. At the 3/4 mark of the first period Berube gets pitched for a 5 min major for boarding. Still not a meaningful fight in any of this – go figure.

  26. titans04 Says:

Vokes mysteriously scratched, Miller injured early and Potatotaco is one of the 13 left standing so far tonight.

  27. trentondevilsfan Says:

So this one should get completely out of hand in short order.

  28. Shtikl Says:

Lucky Akeson. Swapped for cash, say?

Looks like only 3300 diehards showed up in Reading to watch this game. They’re down about 500 a game this season from last, maybe the 3-team division format is hurting their gate too? Or is it just that they play so many snoozefests against the T-Devs?

  29. titans04 Says:

43.5 Game Misconduct – A game misconduct penalty must be assessed
anytime a major penalty is applied for checking from behind. In
addition, the player shall be suspended automatically for not less than
    one (1) game

Won’t be seeing Berube on friday either.

  30. titans04 Says:

HUGE win in Albany tonight with Wiseman potting 4 in a row in the 3rd period. Killer’s bunch narrowing their playoff deficit to a slim 19 points.

Wiseman had 6 coming into the game.

  31. chiarams Says:

Reading is tired of the ECHL at AHL prices – especially when you can go watch Hershey for nearly the same cost.

Not to mention the fact that Reading is the AHL callup beeyotch of the northeast.

Congrats to Wiseman – too bad there was no one there to see it.

  32. titans04 Says:

8 and counting, however take solace in this one being filed in the moral victory category, gotta lead the league in that department. Again not about the players that are still stuck here but the tools that call the shots in albany.

  33. trentondevilsfan Says:

Dammit, lost in the shootout. This group just has zero margin for error, and they’re very error prone.

‘Bout sums it up I guess.

  34. chiarams Says:

Tragic number is at 5 points, I believe.

  35. titans04 Says:

Gotta be headed for the worst record in the franchise history, no?? Certainly feels like the worst one since we’ve been around.

Honestly can you imagine the ticket sales for next season are going to look like, maybe they should invest in curtains to section off about 80% of the seats on most nights.

  36. trentondevilsfan Says:

Aside from Ginand, Thomas, Kell on most nights, Stoesz’s spark….there’s just not a lot to work with here.

I don’t know how anyone can kill Dean. It’s not like these guys are underachieving (Akeson maybe an exception), they’re just not good. What is he supposed to do? Doubt he has any say in obtaining players & is stuck with what ChrisLam sends him.

I guess the org will see Berube, Thomas, Ginand and think they may have three guys for Albany so it’s a successful season.

  37. Titans04 Says:

I agree but would include leadeler (as Kevin calls him) and Tony as two other guys who’s games have gone backwards. I think Trevor was better last year too. However to me its more about no effort to improve the lineup throughout the season. Realistically they’ve been done for months. 3 2 game winning streaks all season, that’s as weak as it gets imo. They just never got anything going.

Imagine the lineup we will be blessed with on Friday with Berube suspended, Miller left injured. Who knows what’s happening with Coutu and the mystery scratching of Vokes. I would assume if Vokes was ill they would have said that.

Seriously thinking of taking a pass on one or both this week. There were some old time season ticket holders that use to sit next to us. Once the Devils came to town he loudly rooted for every visiting team that came to town. We would sit there and go who the help would do something like that. Well I get it now honestly I’ve grown to hate what the Devils have done since day one. When they first arrived well took solace in the fact that getting phantoms tickets were a solid option. Now we find ourselves once again asking ourselves wtf are we thinking by coming back year after year. If there were another way to fill 30 nights a year we would do it in a heartbeat.

Serious question has anybody ever come across a email address for the masterminded behind the minor league failure that is the Devils org?

  38. Titans04 Says:

Frazee is hurt yet again, guy is as tough as nails no doubt about that. Out at least through the weekend.

  39. Langhorne Devil Says:

    tdf: re Dean.

I admit it is hard to kill a lame duck. But, i just dont think he has got what it takes

    1) I dont think he can motivate the players

    2) I think his tactical options are lacking (trying to play strong hockey with the smallest bunch of forwards ever known to man).

Depressing still 6 more to drag my a$$ to.. That is a bad think to say – given we are pacying for this priveledge.
