Weak-End

(PR) Elmira, NY – Yannick Tifu scored his second goal and fourth point of the game to snap a 3-3 tie with 5:34 remaining in the third period to lead the Elmira Jackals to a 4-3 win over the Trenton Devils Sunday at First Arena. The Jackals scored three power play goals in the second period in extending their lead in the season series, 7-5.

Tifu’s four points give him 20 in 12 games against the Devils this season, while Justin Donati took over the ECHL lead in scoring (74), contributing four points on the afternoon. Marco Cousineau won for the fifth time of the season against the Devils by making 19 saves on 22 shots and the Jackals improved to 25-23-6-1 by winning their third straight game, keeping pace with the Gwinnett Gladiators who won in Reading for eight in the Eastern Conference.

Jeff Lerg made 30 saves for the Devils whose record stands at 21-31-1-4, and they now trail Elmira and Gwinnett by 10 points for the conference’s final playoff spot with 15 games left in the regular season. A bright spot for Trenton in defeat was the play of Matt Vokes who notched his first two-goal game of the season, while Jeremy Akeson scored the Devils’ other goal.

Matt Vokes two-goal effort started with the game-opening score at 11:49 of the first period, when he directed a centering feed by Matt Lombardi from the left-wing corner past an outstretched Cousineau.

A 17-save first period by Jeff Lerg maintained the Devils’ 1-0 lead into the second period, however Yannick Tifu knocked the first shot of the middle stanza off the crossbar and into the net to tie the game, 1-1, 28 seconds into a carryover penalty with Drew Paris and Justin Donati garnering assists.

Less than four minutes later, the trio of Tifu, Paris and Donati struck again on an Elmira power play. This time, Drew Paris was the goal scorer and he beat Lerg with a shot that hit Trenton’s goalie and trickled over the goal line for his third of the year.

Justin Donati potted Elmira’s third power-play goal of the second period by scoring during a five-on-three at 11:45 of the second period.  Donati’s goal came on a hard feed from the right-wing corner that hit Lerg and dribbled over the goal line.

A determined Devils team climbed out of the two-goal hole with two quick strikes in the first five minutes of the third period. Jeremy Akeson started the comeback by finishing a set up by Dave Leaderer, and Matt Vokes drew the Devils even by stuffing in the rebound of a Dan Charleston shot taken from point-blank range in front of the net.

However, the Devils would only be tied with the Jackals for 10:14 as Tifu’s goal with 5:34 remaining in the third period sealed a 4-3 Elmira win, their third in a row since Robbie Nichols replaced Malcom Cameron as head coach Wednesday.

The Devils next travel south for three games next weekend against the Greenville Road Warriors and Gwinnett Gladiators, not returning to Sun National Bank Center until March 11 when they face the Toledo Walleye at 7:00 p.m.

Seems fairly typical. They can stay close but can’t manage to get over the top often enough.

  2. Titans04 Says:

How many Federal League guys played for Elmira today?

Caruso again in street clothes today.

Albany and Trenton grabbed 1 out of 14 points this week.

Totally feeling bad for the players at this point. Must be heart warming to see the org does even care enough to TRY and make the lineup better. Or hell make an effort like getting Caruso to Trenton when they knew he wasn’t even going to dress last night and today.

  3. Bob Smyth Says:

Work hard, but can’t finish. Guess they just don’t have the talent, and when the play shows talent, then the goaltending fails, thus rarely do all the parts come together.

  4. Section 106, Row F Says:

Send Martin Brodeur down to Trenton. That’d boost ticket sales here the way it does when he plays in Newark. Not that attendance matters to the Lamoriello cartel…but at least we’d have a chance.

There’s a vacuum on the bench at SNBC. It affects everyone that sits there.
Lerg is a sieve. Connolly is a funnel. Trenton defense is that mysterious black hole your Science teacher told you about in high school…cant dispute it…or even prove it exists.

At least they dropped some of the concession prices….a bit…a very little bit. (ok, so I’m trying to justify re-ordering partial package tickets for 11-12)

Isn’t anyone in fear of this team moving? It’s still inexpensive great family entertainment…

  6. chiarams Says:

I would happily help the Devils pack if they want to leave Trenton.

  7. titans04 Says:

    Same here Chiarams.

Even Kevin said last night that for the first couple of months he cared too much about wins and loses and he’s learned to focus how they play based on the lineup and he can accept results regardless of whether or not they win. Just what the org wanted to hear I’m sure.

It’s also utter BS that Caruso has been in street clothes the last three games in Albany, now the running joke in Albany is that he’s taken Caruso’s corner up there joining the radio broadcast between the 2nd and 3rd periods. Sounded happy as a pig in……. last night when I tuned into their game. Dan at least asked Dean “because some people want to know” with 3 goalies up there when might we expect one?? His answer Dan you’re asking the wrong guy, I haven’t heard anything. Forget the fact that we continued to roll out two of the worst in the league last weekend when at least on paper they still had a chance. Says it all again this year doesn’t it? Actually this year was worse because they couldn’t even be bothered trying to shake things up at any point by making roster moves, in the past at least they would make some kind of attempt?

Anybody ever come across an email address for the clowns that run the show up in Albany? A congratulations are once again in order for the affiliates missing the playoffs for the 12 time in 14 combined seasons and keeping the strak alive of not having won a single playoff series in the last decade.

Marc – just curious are you a sth?

  8. chiarams Says:

T04 – Marc runs the Fire & Ice Blog for the big club.

  9. chiarams Says:

Crap. No he doesn’t. I’m retarded. All these names sound the same after awhile.

  10. Titans04 Says:

Not a shot a Marc but I think he’s in a different posiiton that, me, TDF, LD and Mike who sit there game in and game out year after year, the losing has gotten old and the indifference by the org is at an all-time high.

  11. Titans04 Says:

Actually I shouldn’t have spoken on anybody elses behalf and whether or not the losing bothers them as much as it bothers me. Or the fact that the org imo hasn’t done a damn thing to try and improve this roster all season long.

  12. Langhorne Devil Says:

T04, i think on this occasion as many you are speaking for us all.

I am waiting for Ed to pop up with the renewal forms, my question is going to be, really? what is in it for me.

Apparently, someone told Ed that you can by Season tickets in Newark for decent seats at not much more than we pay in trenton for comparable seats.. Apparantley Ed was less than impressed with the parent club for this.

  13. chiarams Says:

Chris and Lou better not catch wind that anyone is saying anything bad about their precious organization.

But not for nothing, the only seats close in price to T-Devs tickets are in the 200 level at the Prudental, which is like watching a table hockey game.

  14. Langhorne Devil Says:

it sounded like the person saying it, was implying it was a special offer and it was much better than 200 level seats (i must admit i was sceptical) but if it is true??

  15. chiarams Says:

Cincy and Elmira win. 12 points out of a playoff spot.

  16. Langhorne Devil Says:

according to shane connelly’s tweets – he is on his way to utah.

  17. Titans04 Says:

Shocking was there ever a question of which one would go? Seriously did anybody really think they would actually keep the better of the two? Not how it works around here. Lergie as he is often referr de to is a guy the Devils have an interest in.

Anyway guess maybe Caruso will make his way down….. a week too late.
