Whale Bowl

Let’s face it, the closest I’m going to get to covering a Winter Classic or something like today’s Heritage Classic in Calgary will come today in Hartford, CT.

I’m on a bus headed that way to get to Rentschler Field in time for the first of three games that will comprise today’s “Whale Bowl,” which is a celebration of hockey in Hartford and sort of an extension of the re-branding of the Rangers AHL affiliate from the Hartford WolfPack to the Connecticut Whale.

Army plays AIC at 1 PM, Bruins and Whalers legends square off at 4 and the Whale take on the Providence Bruins at 7…the final game is expected to shatter AHL single-game attendance records.

I’m there for ECHL.com, and it’ll all culminate in one big story on the impact ECHL alumni have made on the year’s outdoor games.

That of course means I won’t be in Trenton this weekend…which was a difficult choice to make. But I will update the blog with any relevant T-Devils info I should come across, and will probably share some info from today as well.

In a semi-related note, I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words on the Anthony Felice story. Thought it was a really neat story, and I wanted to be able to share it without getting in the way of it.

Since I know you guys can post comments on the ol’ blog, I’m counting on you guys to keep me updated on what happens this weekend…I can look at a box score just like anyone else, but I want to have more of an idea of what happened than just the numbers.

    Have a great day Mike.

If you want any of us that see the T-Devils games can do the weekend summary this morning without having to wait for the actual games to be played. The only real question is do we drop into dead last in the league this weekend or next? It’s ALL good though.

Dont worry guys just 10 home games left and we can put this sorry season behind us…

  3. trentondevilsfan Says:

Time does fly. Slightly bigger than normal crowd at 6:45. The clock above 102 isn’t working.

  4. Langhorne Devil Says:

Is it ‘casino theory’ don’t let people know the time!

  5. Langhorne Devil Says:

    Myles starting? Fight immediately??

  6. tdevils Says:

It is impossibly cold here. Maybe a third of the estimated 30,000 in their seats…maybe less.

  7. Titans04 Says:

Well if it makes you feel better the disinterest is at a record high here.

Ok I’ll do the best I can to summarize for you mike. Everyone else please correct where ive got it wrong or am just generally talking crap. Starting line of 10,11,25 was interesting. 16,17,18 was second 9,14,21 was third but it shuffled around a bit. Hard to keep track of d pairings from this end.

First 7 mins you probably wouldn’t have made any notes. No one good no one bad just up and down hockey.

Then they scored – firm this end it looked like dubuc just lifted it over lergs right shoulder and he probably dropped down too soon (again).

Straight after restart young dropped gloves with britain, I’d say young had the better of it.

More unremarkable hockey until we got a pp courtesy of a hooking call in front of goal. Pretty quickly ginand shot And missed left, picked up by vokes who skated around the goal before slotting across goal for ginand to tap in to an open net at the back post.

Good penalty kill by devils after a slash by Hayes and that’s it 1-1 after one shots 20-11 to Elmira.

Lerg generally ok, nothing spectacular. Oh a little pushing and shoving in the last minute after Myles appeared to have been shoved into the boards.

Vokes to Ginand was a nice play. Thought we had a decent period in spots. Good crowd, lots of people in 114. It’s weird….

  10. Devil Dawg Says:

All is well again. Clock now repaired over section 102

  11. Devil Dawg Says:

Hell just froze over, akeson scored a goal WITH the keeper in net…

  12. trentondevilsfan Says:

Overall two pretty solid periods. Hope they can keep it up.

  13. Langhorne Devil Says:

    2nd period:

First 6 mins more up and down hockey but no one getting anywhere. Then we had a shove on charleston by brittain followed 90 secs later by a blatant trip by lamp on leaderer. (who only got in that situation after a howler letting the puck go under his stick.)

However during the pp’s including the 30sec 5 on 3. Elmira probably looked more like scaring.

However, the devils then had a strong couple of minutes but to no reward except tying up the shot count ar 26 at the midpoint of the period.

We then went on another pp as donate slashed somebody (sorry don’t know who, I was having a sip of my beer!)

As the powerplay was running low, akeson stood with the puck in the goal line side of the face-off circle, lifted the puck towards goal and somehow it went in.

Obviously feeling scared at being ahead no let decided to take a penalty for cross checking. But the devils killed it easily. Only interest during it was some very minor roughing between tiff and Tony z.

With just under two and a half to go. Dubuc behaved like had been shot, to ensure Taylor went in for four minutes for high sticking.

The devils managed to close out the period – but lerg did have to make a couple of nice saves to do so.

Still Elmira will start the third with still 1min 45 of pplay.

In other news as devildawg said the clock above 102 is back working, and there is a batchelorette party in 107. (seriously you come to this on your last nightnof freedom??)

My good lady said – maybe hey are hoping or a final night of passion with a hockey player. Wrong place to come ladies (this lot can’t last a full 60 mins!)

Intermission highlight of the year: Scorch dumping water on Scott the mc and he falls on his ass, then chases Scorch through the bench, back onto the ice and out through the zamboni entrance. quite funny

  15. JB Says:

LanghorneDevil, you’re forgetting the two season ticket holders who had their wedding on the ice this afternoon and are currently having their wedding reception in the East Club.

  16. Langhorne Devil Says:

    3rd period:

Easily killed the pp and quickly gained one of our own for rug interfering with nolet. V strong pp for devils, the 15, 16, 17 pp line especially good all night. Cousineau left all at sea a couple of times before vokes had a couple of stabs in front of goal before the puck fell out to ginand who decked nicely before foiling the puck into the empty net.

Two goal lead obviously scared them and they were a little sloppy while over committing on offense. Elmira breakaway and neat work by hillier down the right. Created space for him to give if to Llewelyn who flipped it across goal to mahovsky to tap in easily for his first goal of the season.

A hooking call on charleston just before the midpoint was again easily killed.

Devs looked to be trying to play out the game (always unwise with this bunch). Brittain came to the rescue with 4 mins to go by taking another penalty – this time for elbowing. Ginand nearly got his hat trick straight away after combining well with charleston once again.

The penalty ran out and we were all set for 2 mins of nail-biting. Goalie was pulled with 1.27 to go. Devs quickly got the puck and Lombardi hit the post from long range. Vokes and kell both missed difficult empty netters. A scary goalmouth scramble was survived with less than 10 secs on the clock.

Devs win 3-2 shot count was high but I can’t get the final one now. Pender was the scratch.

In the end an exciting game really.

Nice recap. Don’t get how they shut the road on a weeknight but on a Saturday its open and creates a cluster. Brilliant. We’re sitting here waiting this one out.

  18. Langhorne Devil Says:

thanks tdf. as i said to mike – it was difficult without any way to make notes..

JB sorry i wasnt aware of that – i cant see that end of the ice from my seats. Congratulations to both involved.

Now married life – that is something watching trenton does prepare you for.. intial excitement followed by years of disappointment and indifference.

I joke of course. And to my wife who also reads and commetns on here – i am really really joking!!!!

to wrap up my notes shot count ended 45-38 and the game was decided by special teams. Devs penalty kill tnight was excellent. Couple that with an excelent PP line of 15,16 and 17 and that was the difference on the night.

Mike come back soon – it is 12 years since i was a sportswriter and it shows!!!

  19. Titans04 Says:

Good stuff LD. I think I just reached the point of no return this season, we were both bored out of our minds. Glad it was just us though.

    Happy for Jeremy.

  20. Langhorne Devil Says:

    Thanks T04.

I know how you feel – those first 7 mins – i thought this could be a game with nothing to say.. it did perk up – but i still say it wasnt strong hockey (83 shots tell us that) – it is all relative though – it wasnt great but we have had a lot lot worse experiences this year. the annoying thing is (and it is a function of the 11 teams 8 playoffs) they still arent out of it.

7 points behind Elmira and Gwinnett and 8 behind toledo. If they do the same as the last 2 years they will keep us hanging on until the end of the season again.

  21. Titans04 Says:

I did really like Young, as they were lining up for the faceoff right after Elmira scored he started barking at Brittain challenging him to go. I thought he took the bout, watching his fights he’s a patient guy that keeps his right free and does well way more often than not. Also instantly became our best dman by a mile.

Dubuc was still sporting a nice shinner courtesey of Zajacs right hand, I was hoping Stoesz would hand the freak with the long hair another beating but there just wasn’t anything chippy the rest of the games sans whatever that was with Tony and Tifu.

Was waiting for Elmira to get a cheap one in the fine 10 seconds after we missed the open net.

  22. trentondevilsfan Says:

Young made a real nice play in the first along the boards to get the puck out of the zone where all to often we’ve burped it up. Not an edge of your seat game but nicely entertaining I thought. We’ll see what tomorrow brings…
