Caruso Steals One For Trenton

December 10, 2009

Updates might be light over the next few days…turns out I have bronchitis and strep throat and I’m not particularly supposed to do too much of anything for the next week. Anyway, here’s a release…Gwinnett’s was the first one I found online since my e-mail is down, so it’s theirs…

(Gladiators PR) The Gwinnett Gladiators’ home ice troubles continued Wednesday night, as they fell to the Trenton Devils for the first time in team history by the score of 4-3 in front of 2,733 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. The Gladiators were unable to hang on to a third period lead, giving up two goals in less than two minutes midway through the final frame to drop their seventh regulation contest at home.
The fist period saw a number of chances off turnovers at either end, but neither side was able to find the back of the net through the first 15 minuters. But the Devils would strike first when Dan Eves one-timed a pass in the slot from Jeff Prough over Gwinnett net minder David Brown’s glove on a rush at 15:25 of the opening frame. Also picking up an assist on the play was Dave Leaderer. The Gladiators fired 18 shots on Trenton’s Dave Caruso compared to just eight by the Devils, but remained scoreless after the first 20 minutes. Each team was 0-2 on the power play in the period.

Adam Berti got the Gladiators on the board 10:17 into the middle frame, taking advantage of another Trenton turnover in their own zone. Berti was lurking just in front of the net as the Devils were breaking out, and he was able to pick off an outlet pass, taking posession all alone in front of Caruso and beat him to the glove side to tie the game at one.

But the Devils restored their lead two and a half minutes later when they were caught behind the play on a line change, but became the beneficiaries of a Gwinnett turnover, bringing a four-on-one the opposite direction. New addition Jack Combs set up Trevor Kell on the rush, who beat David Brown on the glove side for the 2-1 lead.

The Gladiators again pulled even at 18:12 of the period when Patrick Galivan slipped home his tenth goal of the season on a rebound off of a Scott Marchesi shot from below the right face off circle. Marchesi took a pass from Chad Denny at the right point and let loose a low shot, which found Galivan alone in front of the Trenton goal to make it 2-2.

Shots were 37-22 at the end of two periods.

The Gladiators took their first lead of the night just 17 seconds into the third period on a tip-in goal by Tom Zanoski. Sam Roberts took a cross-ice pass from Drew Paris and fired a shot that caught Zanoski’s stick blade and deflected into the net for his team-leading 13th goal. Drew Paris also picked up an assist on the play.

Trenton erased the Gladiators’ lead at 8:18 on a power play goal after Tim Filangieri went off for tripping at the 7:20 mark and Chad Denny joined him in the box on a delay of game penalty just 15 seconds later. The Devils worked it side to side, and Jeff Prough sent one past Brown from the doorstep on a pass from Brett Wilson for a 5-on 3 goal.

The Gladiators would kill off the remaining penalty, but the Devils took their third lead of the night just as Denny was stepping back onto the ice, when a Justin Pender shot from the point trickled through Brown and drifted just across the goal line, making the score 4-3.

The Devils would hold on through the final half of the third period despite an onslaught of Gwinnett shots and 30 seconds of 6-on-5 action, as Brown was pulled in favor of the extra attacker.

The Gladiators were again held scoreless on the power play in four chances and are zero for their last ten chances, dating back to a December 2nd win in Charlotte.

The Devils went 1-4 on the power play, scoring with the man-advantage on the tying goal in the third period.

David Brown made 29 saves in the loss and falls to 2-2-1-0 on the season, and Dave Caruso made 51 saves, moving to 4-7-1-0 in 13 games played.

The Gladiators fall to 5-7-0-1 at home and 11-7-2-1 on the season and fail to move into third place in the division as Florida and Charlotte battled tonight in Florida.

Trenton had goals from improves to 9-11-2-2 on the season.
