AHL Game 40: Lowell @ Philadelphia

Pre-Game Notes (LIVE from the Spectrum): 6:00 PM — $12 parking and a bowl of popcorn…yes, ladies and gentlemen, I have arrived at the Spectrum.

Not, ummm…you know, particularly much to report at the moment. Figured I’d treat this just like I do a Trenton game, and if someone tells me to stop with the updates, I will. But as of now, I’m anticipating having all the usual stuff you’ve come to expect in a T-Devils game thread.

6:40 PM — Looks like Jeff Frazee vs. Scott Munroe is your goalie matchup. Pictures coming shortly.

6:48 PM — Trenton scratches will be: Alex Vasunyov, Petr Vrana, Chad Wiseman, Pascal Rheaume and Rosario Ruggeri

Trenton starters are: Jeff Frazee, Mark Fraser, Matt Corrente, Rod Pelley, Vladimir Zharkov and Barry Tallackson

First Period: 18:49 left — Olivier Magnan gets a nice chance from in tight on the left side, but Scott Munroe makes the save…

15:01 left — Ryan Murphy gives Lowell a 1-0 lead with a rebound stuff-in from the left side.

13:26 left — And Andreas Nodl promptly ties the game right back up, beating Frazee with a wrist shot from the slot after the puck came off the stick of Jared Ross.

12:26 left — Frazee went to play the puck behind the net, but it got stuck on the top of the boards and came off awkwardly, leading to him falling on his rear end to get a stoppage.  Weird play.

10:52 left — Lowell’s outshooting Philly, 9-4, so far.  Can’t say there’s been a lot of quality chances, though…

10:17 left — Patrick Maroon went hard into the boards after a hit from Rod Pelley and was down and motionless, face-first on the ice for a few seconds.  Pelley got a boarding penalty, and Philly’s on the…uggh, Peco Power Play.

7:15 left — Ryan Parent’s in the box, and the Devils take the man advantage.  By the way, I’ve wanted to call Lowell “Trenton” about eight times by now…

6:33 left — Munroe makes a few stops in a scramble in front of the crease…Lowell’s been credited with 12 shots so far.

5:49 left — Lowell has a good chance taken away when Nicklas Bergfors goes flying into the post, knocking the net off…

5:02 left — Anssi Salmela finally takes a wrist shot that Munroe stops…Daniel Briere collects the puck and skates towards the Devils zone, but is tripped up by Michael Swift, giving Philly a man advantage.  It looked like a bit of a dive.  I’d imagine Jon DiSalvatore told the refs the same thing, and it’s now a 5-on-3…he got hit with unsportsmanlike conduct.

4:48 left — 2-1 game.  Philly takes their first lead on a rocket by Jared Ross.  Bad job by DiSalvatore to put his team in that position.  Assist to Briere.

3:55 left — 3-1.  David Laliberte scores on a bang-bang play.  Again…bad job by DiSalvatore.  Really changed the momentum of this game.  That will be all for Mr. Frazee, Dave Caruso is in.

3:00 left — PL3 just challenged Matt Clackson…Clackson had no interest in going.  To be honest, smart move by Clackson.

3-1, PHILLY AFTER ONE.  SHOTS ARE 14-9, LOWELL.  SURE AM PUMPED I CAME HERE TO DO A FRAZEE STORY.

Second Period: Won’t be live blogging the second…will be sitting with my friend Matt behind the net.  Back for the 3rd.  In the meantime, follow the T-Devs here.

Third Period: PHILLY LEADS 4-3 AFTER TWO.  SHOTS ARE 28-11, LOWELL.  DANNY SYVRET SCORED TO MAKE IT 4-1 FOR PHILLY, FOLLOWED BY LOWELL GOALS FROM MATT HALISCHUK AND MICHAEL SWIFT.

Analysis through two?  Sure.  Special teams have really been the story of this game.  Seems like the momentum changes as the door to the penalty box opens.  Didn’t think any of the goals were necessarily Frazee’s fault, but I can’t blame the coach for pulling him and wanting to change up the momentum, either.  I’ve been very impressed so far by Anssi Salmela.  He’s a really solid power play quarterback, and his puck-handling skills and hard, accurate shot are a definite asset.  He may be a little too tentative at times, and little half spin-o-rama move to protect the puck is a little predictable, but he’s definitely an NHL caliber player.

20:00 left — Lowell starts the period with 32 seconds left on a power play…

18:07 left — Weird play…Matt Corrente wipes out behind the net trying to get the puck, turning it over.  Matt Clackson takes a pass in the slot, but his stick breaks.  But the puck goes to Rob Sirianni, who fires a high and hard one on Caruso, who makes the stop.

16:39 left — Lowell goes on a key power play after a trip by Jason DeSantis…

16:23 left — Did I not say that special teams were key?  Swift ties the game at four, essentially getting Frazee off the hook for the L.

15:30 left — Daniel Briere got denied by Dave Caruso on a wraparound attempt…with a larger than usual crowd, I’d imagine this place would have gone nuts had he converted.

13:42 left — Caruso denies Briere again, this time on a hard, low slapper off the rush up the right side.

9:03 left — Lowell’s outshooting Philly, 37-16, at the moment.  Not much going on otherwise…

8:13 left — Big scramble in front of the net…and that was the first time that Caruso reminded me of what I saw outof him in the exhibition game at the Rock in September.  He was all over the place, but he got the job done.

7:59 left — Jeff Szwez gives Philly a 5-4 lead on a backhander that seemed to come out of nowhere.  He beat Caruso high glove to give the Phantoms a huge tally.

6:56 left — Brad Mills cross checks DeSantis to give Philly a big power play.  Not wise.

2:00 left — Munroe’s had to make a few big saves…the intensity is definitely picking up towards the end here.  Shots are 40-20, Lowell.

21.5 left — Salmela simply lost the puck at the blue line trying to stick handle.  With Caruso pulled, Szwez tried to hit the empty net from way behind the red line and missed, causing an icing.  Timeout, Lowell.

Final Score: 5-4, Phantoms

Three Stars:

* Szwez
** Ross
*** Swift

My vote: Briere-Szwez-Swift
