Trenton Wins, Fights In My Absence. Again.

Two-point nights by Jim Henkel and Matt Cohen led the way for the Trenton Devils in their third straight win, a 3-1 decision over the Reading Royals Friday night.

Henkel put the Devils on the board 4:35 into the contest with a power play tally. Cohen passed the puck to Henkel who was skating into the crease and easily tapped in the puck past Danny Taylor to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, goaltender Charlie Effinger started the rush with a timely pokecheck to Henkel. Eric Castonguay then took Henkel’s pass at the Devils blue line and went streaking through the left wing of the Royals zone, firing a wrist shot over Taylor’s left shoulder at 10:57 for a two-goal lead.

David Nimmo put the Royals within a goal at 12:28 with a slam dunk goal from the slot off of a pass from Chris Stevens.

Despite giving up the goal, the Devils continued to apply pressure on the Royals, which paid off at 18:30 of the second. Tyler Burton whacked in a Cohen rebound for his tenth goal of the season, becoming the first T-Devil to reach double digits in goals this season.

Trenton dominated the third period by outshooting the Royals 14-7, and never gave the Royals much chance to get back in the game. The Devils would finish the job with a 3-1 win in front of their hometown fans.

The Devils outshot the Royals 35-24, and Trenton finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play. The Devils also killed off all six penalties, and have killed their last 27 penalties dating back to December 5 against Florida.

Effinger earned his fourth straight win for Trenton with 23 saves, and picked up an assist against the Royals for the second time this season.

The Devils return to action Saturday night against the Royals at Sovereign Bank Arena, with the faceoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will feature the annual Build-a-Bear Auction, with proceeds from the auction going to Habitat for Humanity — Trenton area.
