Winning Streak

(PR) The Trenton Devils were perfect on the penalty kill and got a late tally on the power play to take their first win against the Elmira Jackals this season, a 3-2 decision Sunday afternoon.

The Jackals opened the scoring late in the first period on a two-on-one as Josh Aspenlind buried a one-timer pass from Chris Korchinski with 37 seconds left in the period.

The game turned in Trenton’s favor in the second period, thanks to a big hit by Trevor Kell on Bruce Watson, setting off a furious Joe Grimaldi. The Jackals defenseman proceeded to beat up on Kell, and was ejected from the game for his actions.

During the ensuing major power play for the Devils, Chaz Johnson received a goaltender interference penalty for running over Jason Smith, giving the Devils a two-man advantage.

On the two-man advantage, Tyler Burton banged in a rebound from the crease to tie the game at 8:49. The goal was Burton’s team-leading ninth of the season.

The Devils took the lead at 17:22 of the period on an odd-man rush of their own, as Eric Castonguay set up Ryan Gunderson in the slot, and Gunderson converted on his shot to make it 2-1 going into the third.

The third period would prove to be a difficult one for the Devils, as they were shorthanded 6 times in the period. They killed off each of those penalties, but gave up a tying goal at 12:41 on Wes Cunningham’s fourth goal of the year.

Fortunately for the Devils, they were given a power play with 1:47 left in regulation, which produced the game-winning goal. Trevor Kell fired a shot from the slot to get his seventh of the season with 1:33 left to play, sealing the Devils win.

The Devils killed all 11 of Elmira’s power plays, and went 2-for-7 on the man advantage. Jason Smith made 26 saves to earn his first win of the season, including a stop on a Steve Yetman penalty shot late in the second period.
