We’re Going Str…Oh, They Lost? OK Then.

(PR) The Trenton Devils gave up a two-goal lead against the Elmira Jackals and lost for the fourth time this season to the Jackals in a 3-2 loss on the road Saturday night.

The Devils got on the board 8:37 into the game when Mitch O’Keefe gave up a rebound on a Dave Leaderer shot from the point, allowing Jeff Prough to whack the puck in from the slot. The goal was Prough’s sixth of the season.

Matt Cohen doubled the Trenton lead at 4:31 of the second period when his shot from the near circle trickled through O’Keefe.

Steve Yetman put the Jackals within a goal at 12:33 of the second on a one-timer from Kaleb Betts in front of the net, making the score 2-1.

The Jackals would tie the game in the third period when Benoit Doucet took a loose puck away from Matt Cohen behind the net and wrapped it around past Jason Smith at 3:29.

Josh Aspenlind scored the deciding goal with 8:38 left when he deflected in a Pierre-Luc Faubert wrist shot from the blue line past Smith.

Smith made 26 saves for Trenton in the loss, as the Devils were outshot 29-20. The 20 shots were Trenton’s lowest output of the season. The Devils finished 1-for-4 on the power play, and killed all three of their penalties.

The Devils return to Sovereign Bank Arena Friday night against the Johnstown Chiefs, with the puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears and other stuffed animals to the game for the annual Teddy Bear Toss during the game’s first intermission.

Red Light keeping his personal winless streak alive now a solid 0-7-2. Thank god he got the nod over Effinger who at this point is cleary the better goalie.

They don’t have much choice until Coleman comes back, hopefully next weekend.

Given that they were off until Friday, I see no reason why Effinger doesn’t get the start in back to back games.

Of course they had a choice unless uncle Lou sent a missive down saying I don’t care about winning play the sieve.

  5. Tdevilsfan Says:

Since Lou saw the last meltdown….I dunno. With Coleman due back soon, maybe he wanted to give him yet another chance to actually win a game.

Eventually there HAS to come a point where they decide enough is enough. I mean the guy literally cannot win a game. I have zero faith he can hold the fort – wonder what the guys on the ice think.

I agree with you completely Effinger has brought life to this team and I think they play better when he’s in net. Is he a star, no, but he’s significantly better than Red Light who’s been a bust for two years running. I think they anticipate having Coleman back this weekend. I wonder if Effinger gets moved or they do the right thing and put RL on the next bus to Lowell.

  7. Tdevilsfan Says:

RL just has to go. I mean…it’s the same thing EVERY game. He’s fine until he gives up the first one (whether it’s a softee or not). The players have to be on eggshells; and of course if you’re playing not to make a mistake, you make a mistake.

Heck, maybe that OT goal at home where the defense parted like the red sea, maybe they wanted to avoid screening Smith so he could see the shot (which he should’ve stopped).

  8. chiarams Says:

I’m hardly a Smith backer, but he didn’t play horribly in Elmira. The second goal he was out of position for the wrap-around, but he didn’t get much help from his defensemen all night.

That said, I’ll help him pack if it means having Effinger/Coleman as the goaltending tandem for the duration.

  9. titans04 Says:

It’s a bad sign when the measurement is based on whether or not he was horrible. Most blind squirrels find a nut every once in a while – well all except the winless RL. He was bad last year and looking at the numbers he’s even worse this year – hard to do.
