Shhh…Trenton’s Getting An NHL Goalie

A simple glance at the ECHL’s official transactions page will tell you that the Trenton Devils have acquired goaltender Gerald Coleman from Phoenix.

Everyone else, however, is pretending it doesn’t exist.

The Phoenix Roadrunners did not return a call requesting confirmation.

Trenton Devils officials had no comment.

And Devils head coach Rick Kowalsky, when I mentioned that it sounded like there was more goaltending on the way as a follow-up to a question about Charlie Effinger, had this to offer…

“Is there?  Not yet, no.  We’re standing pat right now.  We’ll get through tomorrow and keep looking at things to get guys off the IR, so we’re going to have to make some decisions, and these guys know it.”

So the team has evidently acquired a goaltender who was in the National Hockey League as recently as the 2005-06 season as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and who is touted as the first “graduate” of the NHL diversity program…I would have thought they’d want to shout this from the rooftops.  Not only did they improve on one of their biggest weaknesses, they now have a pretty sick 1-2 tandem, at least at this level.

Instead, it’s one big secret.

My guesses are that someone’s on their way out in Trenton, and the coaching staff probably hasn’t gotten around to mentioning that yet or that the ECHL thought it would be hilarious to create a transaction that doesn’t actually exist…hmmm, which one do you think it is?

Well, we clearly need a goalie. Strange things have appeared on the ECHL transactions page before though.

Coleman is listed among the ‘inactives’ on their roster. In 4 games he’s 2-1-0-1 with a shutout, a .950 save percentage and a gaa of 1.48.

Works for me. Just no one tell him we haven’t scored in two games….

Coleman was also in the Ducks organization as well. I feel bad for Jason Smith because he is a Devs draft pick and I appreciate the efforts of Effy. Our goal scoring is in Lowell.

He doesn’t get a lot of help but neither did Caruso last year, and Caruso didn’t let beach balls through.
