Game 8: Idaho @ Trenton

Pre-Game Notes (LIVE from SBA): 2:00 PM — As I wrote earlier, the team has acquired D Gord Burnett. However, I haven’t heard if he’s playing yet.

With Jeff Frazee gone, Jason Smith will get the nod in back-to-back games. Anthony Felice is here and will serve as the emergency backup.

Smith needs to show everybody something tonight. He’s 0-2-0-1 with a 3.91 GAA and .811 save percentage. If he’s going to be the guy for an extended period of time, the numbers have absolutely got to be better than that.

3:35 PM — Matt Radoslovich took warmups wearing a full cage.  Rejean Beauchemin will oppose Smith in net today.  Pictures are coming.

3:50 PM — Pictures are posted. Looks like Eric Thomassian will be debuting tonight, by the way.

First Period: Devils starters…

Smith

Page-Gunderson

Gerbe-Radoslovich-Henkel

12:56 left — Trenton’s on the power play.  They got off to a sluggish start in which Idaho was more or less skating circles around them and winning every battle for a loose puck, but things seem to have evened out.

7:04 left — Real good pace to this one right now.  I’d love to tell you what the shots are and such, but the scoreboard isn’t working properly.  Penalty times and shot totals have gone into some sort of hockey abyss for the time being.

4:18 left — Idaho is bigger, faster and certainly appears to be the better team right now.  But they haven’t been able to get one, and it’s still scoreless.  Wouldn’t be surprised if Beauchemin’s shaky puck-handling skills don’t cost the Steelheads at some point, though.

1:15 left — That was bound to happen.  Idaho’s Bryan McGregor puts one home to give the Steelheads a 1-0 lead.  Smith’s been pretty good, but he’s just got nothing going in front of him right now.

END OF FIRST — IDAHO LEADS 1-0.  SHOTS ARE…UHHH, WELL IDAHO’S LEADING BY A LOT.

Second Period: Idaho outshot Trenton, 13-3, in the first period.  The second is getting underway…

19:28 left — Nice save by Beauchemin on a shot on a 2-on-1 by Eric Castonguay.

17:35 left — McGregor’s one away from the hat trick, burying one from the right side of the ice after Smith overcommitted on the play.  2-0.

16:55 left — 3-0, Ben Nelson with the tally.  Power play goal this time around.  Idaho is just obviously the better team.  No doubt.

9:31 left — Uploaded a few videos.  Still 3-0.

3:51 left — Ryan Gunderson gets a PP goal to make it 3-1.  He took a slap shot from the high slot, just inside the blue line…the shot may have been deflected, so stay tuned.

13:6 left — Robert Page just took a five minute major for cross checking Kris Sparre in the face.  Sparre was coming in to finish his check in the corner, and Page just kind of threw his arms up to protect himself, but his stick made contact with Sparre’s face, who was obviously down for a bit.

3-1, Idaho, end of 2.

Third Period: Third period just getting started.  Shots through two are 25-9, Idaho.

15:00 left — Smith must have made about five or six saves on the power play, including two minutes where Idaho had a 5-on-3.

14:30 left — Smith makes another big save, shutting down Justin Bourne on a 2-on-1.

12:51 left — Scott Bartlett and Kris Sparre just had a very brief scrap, they might even just call it roughing…

9:45 left — Castonguay did his little move where he comes to the edge of the right circle, stops and then cuts across the middle and shoots across his body.  Beauchemin with the save, still 3-1.

8:00 left — Trevor Kell may have just had Trenton’s best chance on a partial break after a nice deke, but Beauchemin made the save.

4:19 left — Trenton’s on a PP.  Have to get one here.  Have to.

1:03 left — Well, they didn’t get one.  Beauchemin stops Burton on the doorstep afterwards.  Timeout, Trenton.  Smith remains on the bench.

26.3 left — Aaaaaaand a Trenton hooking penalty in the offensive zone will seal the deal.  Smith back in net.  Game, set, match.

Final Score: 3-1, Idaho.  And it wasn’t really that close.

Three Stars:

* Bryan McGregor
** Brent Shepheard
*** Adam Welch
